EVERY 6 MONTHS

WHY? What does your dentist look for? And how can your dentist help you in a way that you cannot help yourself?

ORAL HYGIENE HEALTH UPKEEP
Oral hygiene upkeep is vastly important to one’s overall health in order to prevent diseases related to poor dental health. Visiting the dentist regularly helps prevent diseases such as Diabetes, Heart disease, Cancer and even Alzheimers Disease. It also helps to detect certain diseases, eg Cancer, at an early enough point to prevent the spread of it.

MONITOR TEETH AND GINGIVA (GUMS)
Visiting me regularly, is a small contribution, to your obligation to yourself for your health. Your dentist can teach you what you need to do, but cannot be there to monitor you daily. Following procedures and techniques passed onto you by your practitioner, can only help to maintain and improve your oral  environment. As an individual, one needs to ensure that they are compliant with a good oral hygiene regimen including visiting the dentist for your 6 monthly consultations to ensure your mouth gets the extra attention that you cannot give it yourself. (generally a scale and polish)

EXTRA HELP AND ASSESSMENT FROM YOUR DENTIST
So what do I do exactly? There are many facets to a 6 month consult. I would assess the health of your Teeth(decay, fractures, damaged fillings, contact between teeth), Gingiva, Temperomandibular Joints, Inner tissues (cheeks ,hard and soft palate),  Tongue, Sides of your tongue, Lips, Skin, and Signs for lesions associated with diseases such as Oral Cancer and Diabetes, Signs of disease like loose teeth which indicates bone resorption… and the list does go on

EXAMINATION OF YOUR HEAD AND NECK
I assess Symmetry, Look for irregularities and Swellings. An assessment is carried out involving Lymph nodes as well as lower jaw joints, your throat also plays a large indication in picking up lesions associated with diseases like HIV

X-RAYS / RADIOGRAPHS
2 small x-rays is the basics to early detection of decay, secondary decay, leaky fillings and many other discoveries. A radiograph assists both the practitioner and yourself. It saves you future pain as well as excessive costs. To spend about R200 to prevent spending thousands sound like a really cheap option to me. Initially a cavity has no symptoms, you continue with life as normal until it spreads to a deeper level of the tooth. These small x-rays, help prevent larger problems. If a cavity is detected early, a  conservative, less expensive restoration, with fewer dental visits, will be required.

PERIODONTAL DISEASE
Small presentations, like bleeding gums, indicate inflammation and GINGIVITIS. When not treated with a simple cleaning, these conditions worsen and eventually involve the need of a specialist to hault the action of these micro-organisms which cause bone loss, recession and loosening teeth. Don’t be the victim of bacteria, when you can prevent halitosis!

NEED FOR SPECIALIST INTERVENTION
YOUR DENTIST, helps refer you to the correct channels for things like orthodontics(braces), and Periodontist for bone loss etc

BRUXISM
Grinding your teeth, a condition caused by stress, has solutions. You do not need to be a statistic of demolished teeth from stress. I can help you control this, or STOP this kind of pain that will occur from high stress levels. And let’s be serious, who in Johannesburg has NO stress!!!

Regular Dental Visits and Excellent home care habits synergistically keeps your oral cavity healthy. Early intervention saves time and money. Be proactive as prevention is better than cure!!!

Yours Sincerely
